The Hague
The Hague hasn’t got the reputation of a real ‘student city’ within the Netherlands or throughout the world. But it is! Currently there are 27.000 students who follow higher education in The Hague. ‘A city is not a student city as long as it has no real university’ people might say, but in the case of The Hague this is not true. Not having a university does not make the city less attractive to students.
Just look at the high number of student associations or the nightlife at the ‘Grote Markt’ or 'Het Plein'. Most of the young people who come to The Hague acclimate themselves fast, and they don’t want to leave.
Residence of the royal family
As you are living (or come to live) in The Hague, you will get to know a different kind of celebrities. Diplomatic cars, escorts, motorcades, people crowding the streets, those are signs of the Queen or another member of the royal family is paying a visit to the streets of The Hague. This does not only happen on Queensday, but also on royal weddings. This is very entertaining!
Residence of government and parliament
A nice thing about living in The Hague is that you easily can attend demonstrations against the government or other things you want to inform the public about.
The Hague city of peace and justice
When you commit a crime on an international level, the ICC (International Criminal Court), seated in The Hague, will take care of it. This is one of the reasons why The Hague has such an international character. Annually, there are thousands of people coming to study International Law at the University of Applied Sciences for International Law.
The Hague ‘biggest village of Europe’
In 1806 The Hague was chartered to municipal law. That means it became a city.
This was more of a symbolic act, because a while later the difference in law between city and rural parts was abandoned. Nowadays, The Hague, with a population of around 500.000 citizens, is the third largest city of the Netherlands. So there is lots to explore. But if you ever want to get out for a day other cities such as Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Leiden or Delft are close by. They are very easy to reach by train.
25.000 Students and 5 Universities of Applied Sciences
In The Hague you have the opportunity to study almost everything you want. Besides of the Bachelor Programs a few Masters Programs are also offered. And as soon as you live in the neighbourhood you will notice what a lively student city The Hague is.
